How to setup your mobile router for FLTE
FAQ's
Frequently asked questions

How do I set up my router?

Please refer to this article to learn how to set up your router.

What is fixed LTE?

Fixed LTE is a high-speed internet connection for your home. There are no wires and no fibre required. All you need is FLTE coverage in your area.

Is connectivity dependant on the network in the area?

There must be Fixed LTE coverage in your area. This Fixed LTE service is locked to your home address.

Can I change my address / will I be able to use this device from my new house?

Unlike LTE, Fixed LTE is designed to be used only at a single location (your home address), but your contract with your network will allow you up to 2 address changes per year.

Why can't I use my normal router?

To maintain the higher speed required for FLTE, a specific router (the Cat6 router) is required. Routers that are not designed for FLTE will slow your speeds.

What is a Cat6 router?

A Cat6 router (also known as a Category 6 device) is a router designed for faster speeds up to 300Mbps.

Why is coverage important?

When activated, FLTE locks your service to a tower near your home address. Without FLTE coverage in your area, you will not be able to make use of this service.

What are the approved routers?

Approved LTE (4G) routers:

ZTE MF286R

ZTE MF286C1

ZTE Mf286C3

Huawei B612-233

Huawei B61S8 22D

Huawei B525S - 65A

Huawei B612S-25D

Approved 5G routers:

ZTE MC801A

Huawei 5G CPE Pro2

Can I use my Home Wi-Fi SIM in a different device?

Yes, you can use your 4G SIM card in a 5G-approved router.

However, you cannot use a 5G SIM in a 4G router.

Your 5G SIM card should only be placed in a 5G-approved router.

My router is locked to a different service provider. Will I still be able to use it for MyMTN Home?

Unfortunately not. Once your router is locked to another service provider, you will not be able to use it on the MTN network.

What happens if I put the SIM card into a smartphone?

Your FLTE SIM card is only active when placed in a router. Your home internet will be suspended if the SIM card is put into a smartphone. Please note, once you return your FLTE SIM card to your router it can take up to 30 minutes for your home internet service to be reactivated.

Can I use this home Wi-Fi 'on the go' ?

No, MyMTN Home is a fixed location service that is linked to your home address only. During the set-up process, your FLTE SIM card, router and location are all paired together.

What are the Fair Usage Policy and a “soft cap”?

The Fair Usage Policy (FUP) refers to how much data can be used each month. Once that value is reached, your network can apply a ‘soft cap’. This reduces your data speed to either 2Mbps or 4Mbps, depending on your price plan.

1

First check that your SIM card has been activated. Your FLTE router comes with a tri-SIM card (3 SIM sizes in 1).

Remove the SIM from the card and insert the correct sized SIM into your mobile phone. If your SIM has been activated, you will receive a confirmation SMS.

*NB: Don’t throw away the plastic SIM adapter because you will need this to insert your SIM into your router later!

2

Once your FLTE SIM card has been inserted into your phone, switch Airplane Mode ON and then OFF, to connect quickly.

*NB: If you aren’t picking up a connection, this means your SIM has not been activated yet. Remember, it can take between 1 to 2 working days to activate a new SIM. If it has been longer than 2 working days and your SIM card is still not activated, please contact the Mondo Customer Care team on 086 123 8888 or email us at customercare@mondo.co.za

3

If your SIM is activated, remove it from your phone and insert it into your router. Ensure the SIM card is the correct size and facing the correct direction (gold side facing upwards).

4

You can set up your router by connecting the supplied LAN cable or through Wi-Fi using your PC or smartphone. If you are connecting via Wi-Fi, please select the ZTE 2.4G option from the available Wi-Fi connections on your PC or your smartphone.

Once connected, you will need to open your internet browser, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge and enter the following IP Address in the address bar at the top of the page:

192.168.0.1

*NB: This does not require internet access.

5

If you are asked for a password, please enter “admin” or the WLAN KEY which you can find on the label at the bottom of your router.

You will now see the router’s home screen, where you will find 3 options:

  1. Access Device
  2. My Router
  3. Net Surfing

*NB: The UMTS or LTE button will be switched to OFF. Leave this OFF for now. Select Settings under Option 2 “My Router.”

6

Change the “Mode” setting from “Auto” to “Manual”.

Then scroll down to “Profile” and click the “Add New” button.

7

Once Step 6 is done, you will need to fill in the following fields:

Profile Name: This can be any name of your choice, e.g., Home Internet.

APN: mymtnhome (In lowercase)

Authentication: NONE

*NB: Your Username and Password tabs will remain blank.

8

Click the “Apply” button and then click the “Set as default” button.

Once this is done, scroll back up and change the “Mode” setting from “Manual” back to “Auto”.

How To Video Guide

You can now return to the router’s home screen and set the data connection button (UMTS) switch to ON. The red light on your router will turn green and you’ll be connected to the network!

Happy surfing!
