OPPO is entering the flip phone game.
Flip phones made their debut in the mid-90s with the Motorola StarTAC. With the rapid advancement of technology, it’s no surprise that this form of smartphone is making a comeback.
From 2011 to 2019, flip designs took a back seat as smartphones morphed into a rectangular slab. But for the past three years, they’ve headed back into the fold, led by Samsung’s impressive Galaxy Z Flip and Fold series. Now, we’re on to another great chapter as tech giants from all over the world race to expand their flip phone range.
OPPOrtunity to Shake Things Up
Chinese manufacturer, Oppo, is looking to challenge Samsung’s stronghold on the foldable market with the release of the tentatively named Find N Flip, the company’s first-ever clamshell smartphone. But this can only be possible if it launches internationally, unlike Oppo’s highly praised debut foldable, the tablet-style Find N, which unfortunately never shipped outside China.
Right now, the details surrounding the Find N Flip are based on rumours and speculation. But one tipster has good reason to believe Oppo has more worldwide goals in mind. If an international release proves true, Oppo is bringing serious competition to the foldable market. And even if it isn’t destined for the global stage, it’s undoubtedly still worthy of attention as chances are it will influence how other manufacturers build foldables in the future.
Slim Picking When it Comes to Specs
Although there aren’t a tonne of leaked specs available, reliable tipster Digital Chat Station offers some insight on what to expect with the much-awaited OPPO Find N Flip.
Display
The debut clamshell is tipped to feature a 6.8-inch OLED main display that supports a full HD+ resolution of 2520 x 1080 and a 3.26-inch OLED display on the cover. If this is accurate, the outer display will be much bigger than the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which only hits 1.9-inches.
Camera
The camera looks promising as it’s set to sport a massive 32MP selfie snapper, 50MP main shooter, and 8MP ultrawide. The camera trio is tipped to be powered by Sony’s premium sensors, which include the IMX709, IMX766, and IMX355.
Chipset & Beyond
The silicone under the hood could either be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 or the Snapdragon Plus Gen 2, which the chip maker is yet to release. Other suggested specs include a 4,300 mAh battery and Color OS 13 straight out of the box.
Disruption on the Horizon
Another foldable release by Oppo rumoured for next month is the tentatively named Oppo Find N2, the much-anticipated successor to the Find N. The specs are tipped to be similar to the Find N Flip. This means Oppo could have two foldable phones shipping outside China as we enter 2023.
Talk about creating disruption!
Oppo is tight-lipped about its debut clamshell foldable, but if the specs are anything to go by, it will pack powerful hardware and the latest software that could see it rival leading foldables on the market right now. Of course, this all depends on whether or not it makes it out of China. If it does, we may see the foldable market change direction from evolution to revolution.
