The foldable smartphone segment is heating up after OnePlus teased that it’s entering the foldable game with the OnePlus V Fold and OnePlus V Flip. At the OnePlus Cloud 11 event on February 7, the Chinese tech conglomerate showcased a long list of upcoming devices, including the flagship OnePlus 11, OnePlus 11R, OnePlus Buds Pro 2 series, OnePlus TV 65 Q2 Pro, OnePlus Pad and OnePlus keyboard.

Towards the end of the event, the company provided a glimpse of its first-ever foldable smartphone, which only had one frame lasting a few seconds. With not much to go on, rumours are swirling, and many tech analysts say there’s a big likelihood that OnePlus will release horizontal and vertical folding smartphones, although, there’s also a possibility of just one device.
Oppo Inspires OnePlus
OnePlus forms part of the BBK Electronics Corporation alongside sister companies Vivo and Oppo, which have already launched foldable smartphones. It’s widely assumed that the new OnePlus foldables will take inspiration from the Oppo Find N2 and Oppo Find N2 Flip (the first Oppo foldable to launch outside China).
With both brands falling under the BBK umbrella, it won’t be a surprise if Oppo and OnePlus share commonalities in hardware and software. But this may confuse international consumers since the Find N2 Flip and OnePlus foldables may be identical phones with different brand names. Or perhaps BBK is bringing something completely new to the table to prevent its sister companies from clashing. We just have to wait and see!
Rivalling Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip
The new devices are likely to arrive in April or June this year, with OnePlus already trademarking the monikers OnePlus V Fold and V Flip through the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). There are not many details from the CNIPA, but the proposed names seem to mimic Samsung’s foldable smartphone language. For this reason, it’s widely thought OnePlus is developing a large foldable device and another with a clamshell style. If so, the tech conglomerate may be positioning itself as a direct competitor to Samsung’s best-in-class Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series.
With OnePlus on its way to joining Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei in the foldable game, will it follow the crowd or hold a pioneering position at a time when new and better foldable technology is always developing?
