Is The Huawei nova 12 Series Really a Big Deal?

Known for their big batteries, ample storage and impressive displays, the Huawei nova series has long been a favourite among selfie fans.
But now, the company has gone one step further by introducing the Huawei nova 12 Series.
The range includes the Huawei nova 12i, Huawei nova 12 SE, and the soon-to-be-released Huawei nova 12s.
Here's everything you need to know about the new series.
Slim, Stylish, Lightweight
Huawei has always been keen on aesthetics, and the nova 12 Series draws inspiration from the concept of “nova,” which means "new star". The nova 12 Series continues to impress with a slim and stylish design ideal for the fashion-forward and tech-savvy user. All phones in the nova 12 series feature a 6.7-inch eye-smoothing screen with razor-thin bezels, providing a wider and more immersive view weighing less than 200g, making them ideal for gaming, streaming, or browsing. The Smooth Dimming Control dynamically adjusts screen brightness based on ambient light, reducing eye strain and ensuring visual comfort.
The Best Camera Yet
The nova 12i is the cheapest of the range, retailing at approximately R7,000 and one of its standout features is its 108MP High-Res camera, one of the best nova cameras to date. Equipped with large nine-in-one pixelfusion technology, this camera excels at capturing high-definition photos in both bright and low-light conditions allowing for incredible light sensitivity, with optimised brightness, clarity and dynamic range.
The main differences in appearance among these three models are the backs and the lens modules. If you really want to make a fashion statement, consider opting for the Huawei nova 12i, which features a dazzling Super Star Orbit Ring around its central camera module. In comparison, the nova 12 SE has two side-by-side circular lenses that form a star ring design.
Extended Battery Life
Battery life is a critical concern for any smartphone user and the nova 12i series addresses this with its powerful 40W Huawei SuperCharge Turbo. This feature allows you to fast charge the battery to 62% in just 30 minutes, providing full-day usage. The 5000mAh battery, coupled with intelligent AI Power Saving Technology, adapts to your usage patterns, automatically closing inactive apps to maximise battery efficiency, giving you more time between charges.
Space for Everything
With up to 256GB, storage is another area where the nova 12 series excels. You get 8GB of RAM, ideal for all your documents, music, photos, and more. This is particularly beneficial for younger users who rely on their smartphones for everything from school to entertainment.
Processing Pace
It's worth pointing out that the nova 12 series still uses the same processor from last year’s nova 11 series of phones, which means that 5G is once again absent. However, the debut of EMUI 14 — the phone’s OS — will be enough to counter that, offering advanced security features and personalised options.
Users can expect customisable lock screen themes and Always-On Display (AOD) support provides a secure and tailored user experience. Additionally, the Live View and Notification Centre includes features such as weather wallpapers, interactive wallpapers, and the Superhub to keep you informed and focused.
Working out whether the new Huawei nova 12 series is a big deal will largely depend on whether you’re new to the brand or not.
A lot of the technology is the same as previous phones, and so adds little value if you considering an upgrade from the nova 11 series. However, if you are new to the brand, the advanced camera capabilities, robust battery life, ample storage and improved user experience make these phones a top contender in the smartphone market, offering something for photography enthusiasts, heavy users and of course, the style-conscious.
