Apple iPhone 12: Even More Choice for 2021!

Apple decided to launch a new range of Apple iPhones towards the latter part of 2020. However, South Africa only received the latest batch of these beloved smartphones in late December. Users are now eager to find the ideal iPhone 12 for them, but with the biggest range ever launched, it may be tough to decide. The four new iPhones are the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Let’s take a closer look at the entire range on offer from Apple. Under the Hood All four devices have the latest A14 Bionic chipset. This is Apple’s latest and best chipset available and rivals any Android option. It’s an upgrade from the A13 that was in the iPhone 11 range. Apple hasn’t disclosed the RAM for each device but it is rumoured to be 6GB for the Pro models and 4GB for the others. In terms of storage, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini are available in 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB while the Pro models offer 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations. Screen and Body The whole iPhone 12 range has a similar physical appearance with a front that consists mostly of the screen with a notch at the top and a Ceramic Shield. It is strikingly similar to the industrial design introduced with the iPhone 4 and 5 lines. The large camera cluster is at the rear left corner of the device while the glass back is standard. The difference comes in the frames as the Mini and standard 12 models get aluminium frames while the Pro models are equipped with stainless steel frames. All iPhone 12 models are IP68 certified with a water-resistance depth up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. The major differences between the devices are their available colours and size: While the screen on all four models are OLED with similar pixel densities, their difference is purely in size. Naturally, the iPhone 12 Mini has the smallest screen at 5.4-inches while the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro feature a 6.1-inch screen with the iPhone Pro Max sporting a huge 6.7-inch display. iPhone 12 Cameras The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini have the dual-lens rear camera setup with a main 12MP lens and an ultra-wide 12MP lens. The Pro models have a triple-lens rear setup which includes what the basic models have with the addition of a telephoto camera with a 4x zoom in the iPhone 12 Pro and 5x zoom in the iPhone Pro Max. The two high-end devices have a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanner, for improved augmented reality and low light performance. All four devices sport a 12MP front-facing camera and they can all record in up to 4K quality at up to 60fps. Furthermore, they can all record in Dolby Vision. iPhone 12 Battery Apple never releases the battery capacity but we know that all models are capable of 20W fast charging and wireless MagSafe charging, although the fast chargers are sold separately. In terms of video playback, the iPhone 12 Mini can offer up to 15 hours while the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro deliver up to 17 hours. The iPhone 12 Pro Max tops the charts at 20 hours. Other Features All models support dual-SIM along with Face ID and the TrueDepth camera for facial recognition. Verdict Apple delivered four different options for users who want various experiences via their smartphones. Multiple price options are depending on the model and size you choose.

Huawei P40 Lite: Another Win for Huawei

Huawei had their work cut out for them launching the P40 Lite as part of their first major smartphone range from the tech giants without Google Mobile Services. There was no room for error and the company more than made up for it with this strong mid-tier smartphone from their flagship P range, featuring the all-new AppGallery app store and Huawei’s own version of the Android OS. Under the Hood Processing power is where the P40 Lite smashes its rivals. Sporting a home-grown HiSilicon Kirin 810 Octa-Core processor, it’s a massive step up from the previous Kirin 710. Huawei paired the processor with 6GB of RAM which makes for a speedy, responsive experience. You can take on HD gaming or play multiple HD videos without any lag. On the storage front, you get 128GB of onboard capacity with the possibility of adding a microSD card up to 256GB. Since there’s no Google Android, you get the EMUI operating system, which is similar to the Android 10 experience. Screen and Body The P40 Lite has a distinct appearance and stands out from the rest of the P40 range. This version has more rounded corners which makes it user-friendly and comfortable to use. The front-facing camera is situated in the left corner which disappears under the phone’s black status bar. The device feels sturdy in the hand and is available in Sakura Pink and Midnight Black. In terms of the display, you can expect a 6.4-inch FHD+ LCD screen which produces striking colours with sharp clarity. Quad Camera Setup The Huawei P40 Lite sports four rear camera lenses which are perfect for the budding photographer. Users have become accustomed to Huawei’s quality cameras and won’t be disappointed with the primary 48MP camera that handles most of the heavy lifting. The 8MP Ultra Wide Angle lens offers a 120-degree view while the 2MP Macro lens allows you to snap clear close-ups. You can take cinematic portraits with the 2MP Bokeh lens while the selfie camera is a 16MP lens that offers a fantastic Night Mode. Battery Huawei paired the P40 Lite with a 4,200mAh battery which can run two full days with normal use. You get the benefit of fast charging with a 40W fast charger included in the box. According to the company, they estimate a full charge from zero within an hour. Other Features You’ll be pleased to know that Huawei has kept the 3.5-millimetre headphone jack and have included a fingerprint sensor on the side power button. Verdict The Huawei P40 Lite is a strong mid-tier competitor that offers you a fantastic camera experience on a budget. It will take some getting used to not having Google services but the device punches above its weight and is well worth a look.
