Oppo Reno 8 Range: High-Tech on a Budget
Robert Cerff / 10-10-2022 / Tech
The Oppo Reno 8 5G series has officially launched in South Africa, less than six months after the launch of the Reno 7 series. Although there are six phones in the line-up, the Chinese tech giant is shipping the vanilla Oppo Reno 8 and the premium mid-range Oppo Reno 8 Pro. The launch also confirms that Oppo flagship devices will not reach our shores just yet, but we do get a Pro version of the Reno 8 for those after industry-leading specs.
Cameras light up the night
With the new release, Oppo has placed significant emphasis on AI technology, sensors, and night-time photography and videography. Both the Oppo Reno 8 and Oppo Reno 8 Pro boast dual flagship sensors by Sony that allow you to capture crisp, vibrant, true-to-life images in bright and dim environments. They feature a 50MP main shooter with 4X zoom, a 32MP selfie snapper, and advanced AI technology to process 4K and HDR night-time photography and videography.
Although the phones are powered by AI technology that automatically removes noise and lets in more light, the Oppo Reno 8 Pro is equipped with the top-of-the-range MariSilicon X imaging processor that takes computational technology to the next level.
Big and bold display
Is bigger better? Oppo seems to think so. The premium Reno 8 Pro sports an immersive 6.7-inch AMOLED display with narrow bezels and an almost-borderless screen-to-body ratio of 93.4%. With rich colours, FHD resolution and a max refresh rate of 120Hz, the Oppo Reno 8 Pro promises a captivating viewing experience.
The vanilla Oppo Reno 8 comes in with a slightly smaller AMOLED FHD display at 6.4-inches and an extensive screen-to-body ratio of 90.8%. It reaches a max refresh rate of a snappy 90Hz with AI deep learning technology for enhanced frame rates. Although the specs are a notch below the Pro, it’s still pretty impressive for an entry-level mid-range.
No chill charging rates
Under the hood of the Oppo Reno 8 and Oppo Reno 8 Pro is a large 4500mAh battery, which keeps up with current industry benchmarks. Oppo claims that you can reach a 50% charge in under 11 minutes and a 5-minute charge gets you 2 hours of gaming. Achieving these freakishly fast charging rates is an in-the-box 80W Supervooc fast charger.
The chip makes all the difference
The biggest difference between the Oppo Reno 8 and Reno 8 Pro is the power of the chipset. The Pro features the premium MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX 5nm processor with 12GB RAM and 256GB ROM. The chip combined with a massive amount of RAM and internal space makes the Pro ultra-fast, responsive, and smooth. The experience is further enhanced with an AI system booster for optimised performance.
The vanilla Reno 8 boasts the MediaTek Dimensity 1300, 8GB RAM and 256GB ROM. For an entry mid-range, the super-efficient chip, generous RAM and internal space easily place it above its competitors. Similar to the Pro, the overall performance is boosted by AI technology that adjusts automatically for a seamless, smooth experience.
Keeping it cool
The new Oppo range is all about high usability, so you can enjoy all the things you love without slowing down. From streaming, gaming and browsing to capturing memories and multitasking. To perform all these tasks and more, the phones feature a state-of-the-art cooling system made from graphite. It prevents the devices from overheating, even if you're busy with intense tasks for long hours at a time.
