The smartphone market is constantly evolving, with new and innovative devices hitting the shelves every year. Of course, 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year for smartphones, with a number of impressive devices set to make their debut on the international stage, including South Africa.
Here are the hottest upcoming smartphones of 2023:
Xiaomi 13
The Xiaomi 13 is the latest flagship series of phones that are already out now in China but are expected to launch in the international market in 2023. The Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro made their debut in China with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, brand new designs and major camera upgrades, specifically the use of the 1” Sony IMX989 sensor, which has only been seen so far on the Vivo X90 Pro+. The 13 series will also ship with an IP68 rating, a first for Xiaomi. The 13 Pro includes an upgraded telephoto camera with a longer 75mm lens. The 6.73” QHD LTPO 120Hz display now has a maximum brightness of 1200 nits. The 13 series will also feature upgraded 4820mAh batteries, 120W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and a choice of either 8 or 12GB of RAM.
Honor Magic Vs
The Magic Vs, Honor’s second foldable phone, is set for a global launch in 2023. This sleek foldable phone has been designed to prioritise the natural feel of a phone in its closed form factor instead of focusing on the unfolded 7.9” tablet screen, which is secondary to way most people use their smartphones. The powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will power the device along with a larger 5000mAH battery, a 54MP triple rear camera, a choice of 8 or 12GB of RAM, and a lower price point to help Honor compete with similar foldable phones from powerhouses like Samsung and Huawei.
Samsung Galaxy S23
Samsung is gearing up to release the much-anticipated S23 series in early 2023, and speculation as always is rampant. The rumours flying around the internet suggest that the Galaxy S23 series will show off a super-powerful 200MP camera sensor, bigger batteries and new chipsets from Qualcomm. In fact, it seems Qualcomm will provide its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip for the S23 range globally, meaning the Exynos chips will finally be dropped entirely from the international line-up in certain regions, which was a huge complaint from Samsung fans about past generations of the flagship phones.
Samsung Galaxy A54
When it comes to Samsung’s mid-range “A” series of smartphones, the Galaxy A53 has ruled the market since its release thanks to the perfect blend of powerful specs, features and affordability, which means it’s a no-brainer for the company to release a new iteration in 2023. Not much is known right now, but if history is any indicator, the A54 will borrow even more design cues and specs from its older flagship S series models and present them in a more compact and budget-friendly package. A leaked render shows the A54 with a flat array of triple rear cameras instead of the usual bump that houses the modules, a clear inspiration from the Galaxy S22 Ultra that will probably be carried over to the entire S23 line as well.
Apple iPhone 15
Apple likes to keep details of upcoming devices close to the vest, but early iPhone 15 rumours suggest that the new Dynamic Island feature will be seen across the entire range this year, which is kind of disappointing as Apple needs to ditch the pill-shaped cut-out for a hole punch like its competitors or even innovate the selfie camera placement in some manner to finally give us a proper uninterrupted screen experience. Another rumour is that the Pro Max model may be rebranded to use the Ultra moniker, which is strange given that Samsung already uses that designation for its flagship S series smartphone. Only time will tell what Apple have up its sleeves when September 2023 finally rolls around.
Apple iPhone SE 2023
Although Apple seems to release the SE variants on a biannual schedule, this year may be different for one reason – the iPhone mini! Since Apple dropped the mini for the iPhone 14 range, most people are speculating that the mini form factor will be reused for the next generation of the iPhone SE, which is great news for people who love the smaller form factor but have grown tired of the outdated design and physical home button. If this is the case, it would mean that the iPhone will see a noticeable jump in price, but considering the updated hardware, bigger screen and FaceID, most people will be willing to carry that extra cost for their one-handed iPhone.
