The Only Samsung Galaxy A74 Rumour: It Doesn’t Exist
Robert Cerff / 19-01-2023 / Tech
A new headline act
Towards the end of 2022, we expected to see leaked information about the Galaxy A74. But the radio silence raised questions about its existence. Currently, it looks highly likely that Samsung will not release the device and close the chapter on the A7x series altogether, placing the Samsung A5x series at the top of the range.
Although the South Korean tech giant hasn’t published an official statement, the lack of leaked info is a huge sign it’s ditched. The suspicion was first reported by the Dutch site Galaxy Club and soon gained the attention of tech insiders globally.
If the rumours prove true, we can expect the Samsung Galaxy A54 to headline the A-series in 2023, but there’s one big issue.
The missing mid-range
Tech reporters have raised concerns about the large gap in the premium mid-range segment if the A74 doesn’t exist. The common question is, what will fill the gap between the A54 and Galaxy S23 range? There are many possibilities, but it's likely the (unconfirmed) Galaxy S22 FE. Or they can position the vanilla Galaxy S22 in this spot and offer even bigger discounts. It could be a viable option since it’s guaranteed 4 more years of security updates and 3 more years of software updates.
If Samsung fails to fill this gap, competitors won't waste a minute taking advantage of the exposed premium mid-range segment, making for some interesting developments. We may get answers on 1 February, when the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is rumoured to take place.
Inevitable ending
If Samsung has truly bid farewell to the A7x series, this won’t be a huge surprise as the series never enjoyed a worldwide launch. And last year, the Galaxy A73, with its massive 108MP camera, was released in fewer countries than the Galaxy A72, fuelling assumptions that the phasing out was inevitable.
Simplifying or shaking up?
So far, the only rumour about the Samsung Galaxy A74 is that it was never in development, and the entire series is now scrapped. But like all rumours, we have to wait for Samsung to confirm or deny these reports. Is the company simplifying its smartphone line-up, or are we in for a huge shake-up in 2023? Only time will tell.
