Vivo Y02: Taking Entry Level to the Next Level!
Robert Cerff / 13-03-2023 / Tech
The Vivo Y02 is one the latest budget smartphone entries from the Chinese manufacturer, offering a modern design paired with entry-level cameras and specs that don’t make waves, but will nail the basics for most users.
Modern design
The Vivo Y02 has a squared-off 2.5D design like the most recent phones from Samsung and Apple, along with a frosted, non-glossy finish on the all-plastic body which makes it resistant to fingerprints. The circle housing the camera and LED flash looks fantastic, and the accompanying chrome plate around the camera bump gives it a premium look that is usually found in more expensive devices. The Y02 doesn’t have a built-in fingerprint scanner, but you do get face unlock and traditional password lock options. The phone comes in two colours – a muted Cosmic Gray and much more vibrant Orchid Blue.
FullView display
Vivo equipped the Y02 with a bold, immersive 6.51-inch HD+ IPS display with 1600 x 720 resolution and eye protection built into the screen. The display features a refresh rate of 60Hz for smoother scrolling and an overall better experience when watching videos or playing games, while the eye protection screen adjusts screen brightness and filters blue light to ensure your comfort when you’re binge-watching the latest Netflix or Disney shows.
Point and shoot
Although the Vivo Y02 doesn’t have the same level of cameras you’d find on mid-range and flagship devices, it offers just enough to capture the moments that matter to you. On the rear you’ll find an 8-megapixel main camera and LED flash in the circular housing, while the front camera is a 5-megapixel selfie shooter nestled in the display’s teardrop notch. Both cameras can shoot 1080p videos. Daylight shots are acceptable given the specs, but the phone does suffer a bit when it comes to low light shots, however, the LED flash does help to capture better quality images.
Performance
Running Android 12 GO edition, the Y02 is powered by an Octa-core processor with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. It isn’t the fastest phone out there with just 2GB RAM, so bear in mind that you will be limited when it comes to the apps you can run, so games like Asphalt 9 or Fortnite are probably out of the question. Its multitasking capabilities are also hindered by the limited RAM, so you’ll need to stick to using just one or two apps at any given time.
5000 mAh battery
The area where the Y02 really shines is the battery life, thanks to the inclusion of a large 5000mAh battery that, according to some benchmark tests, can last for just over 21 hours on a single charge. This means you can get more than a day of use with the Y02 before needing to charge it with the included 10w Micro USB charger. The 5V/1A reverse charging feature also covers your other electronic devices, turning your phone into a sleek mobile power bank.
Verdict
The Vivo Y02 is an entry-level phone aimed at students or first-time smartphone owners who are on a tight budget and don’t need all the bells and whistles of more expensive devices on the market.
