Why WhatsApp's New Username Policy Means No More Phone Numbers
Gen X and Millennials, do you remember the days of Mxit usernames? Names so cringe they can never be uttered ever again. Now, what if we told you that usernames could be making a major comeback with a new WhatsApp update that's likely to eliminate sharing phone numbers to connect with each other?
WABetaInfo Spills the Tea
The word from WABetaInfo, an independent portal that provides real-time WhatsApp updates, is that the messaging platform is working on a whole host of new features, with the "best" being WhatsApp usernames. These will be linked to all accounts, making it easier to find and connect with others.
They add that the feature is currently under development on WhatsApp for Android and will be available in a future update. An iOS version is also expected to launch, but there’s no word on when.
Wild and Whimsical Usernames on the Horizon?
WABetaInfo had the first look at the feature while testing WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.11.15 from the Google Play Store. The username section was spotted under "Profile" in WhatsApp Settings.
The big question is, when will we be able to create some wild and whacky usernames? Well, according to them, the functionality is still in the early stages of development and it's too soon to fully understand how it works.
Usage might be limited to private communication with businesses, or it could be more extensive, allowing us to communicate with anyone on WhatsApp while protecting our phone numbers. And if it's the latter, will we have control over being discoverable by those searching our username, or will we be able to set limitations on this? Only time will tell.
End-to-End Encryption with Usernames
The update will add another layer of privacy and protection on WhatsApp if phone numbers are no longer needed. But at this moment, WABetaInfo can only confirm that "conversations initiated through usernames will still be protected by end-to-end encryption”.
A New World of Username Connections
The username update looks set to shake things up in the world of WhatsApp. WABetaInfo says it's likely to "revolutionise" how we communicate with each other. And you know what? They might just be onto something.
Picture a world where we can communicate without having to share our phone numbers. You no longer have to worry about businesses or long-lost family members having access to your private digits. It’s privacy and security without losing connection.
Keep the Username Legacy Alive
Most importantly, will the WhatsApp revolution bring back those iconic usernames? Well, the suspense is killing us too. Our guess is that the Gen Z’s will keep the legacy alive.
